Spiderman Brand New Day Breakdown and Predictions
The second trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally dropped and now I'm hyped up again. I've rewatched a few times to try and spot any easter eggs and predict what might happen to Peter.
The Other
I'm pretty sure based on both trailers that they're following "the other" storyline where he goes through strange blackouts and dreams. He becomes so weak that he is killed by Morlun, but then later comes back alive in a web cocoon. After his resurrection he notices a significant upgrade in his powers including night vision and organic webbing. He becomes more spider-like and eventually embraces this "other" part of his upgrade.
I don't think they'll follow this exactly, but the sections within the trailer mentioning his cell degradation and organic webbing suggest they'll definitely take inspiration. Morlun's role might be replaced with Jean Grey and Tombstone. There was rumours about the "Man-Spider" story being followed, but I don't think the MCU would do that to Spider-Man.
Street level stakes
I'm happy that this Spider-Man movie is returning to a street-level story rather than another multiverse adventure. Don't get me wrong, No Way Home was amazing, but the MCU feels like it's missing stories with lower stakes.
Spider-Man always work sbest when he's balancing superhero responsibilities with ordinary life. Rent payments, relationships, jobs, and local criminals are way more interesting to me than Avenger level threats. I'm praying that Brand New Day continues this direction.
Characters I'm looking forward to
Hulk
Seeing Hulk back in his OG form had me stoked. We've been waiting to see the rage-filled Hulk back since Endgame. Also it's going to be fun watching him go against Spider-Man. Peter's got almost 0 chance of beating him, but it'll be feeding us for generations.
The Punisher
We've seen a lot of the Punisher in the MCU recently. The main reason I'm excited to see him is that I wonder how he'll interact with Peter. Part of me has a bad feeling that he may guide him in the wrong direction in regards to how he deals with his enemies. On the other hand, it'll be fun to watch Peter and him argue about morality, similar to his talk with Daredevil.
Scorpion
He's one of the A-tier villains in the comics. We haven't gotten a live-action Scorpion, and Michael Mando is a great actor. One thing which does worry me though is his role in the movie. I'm a little worried he'll have a small role only, despite being a prominent figure.
Jean Grey
They've been teasing the X-Men for years now, so it'd be nice to finally see one of the major mutants properly introduced. Jean Grey is one of the most iconic Marvel characters and her powers could play an interesting role if Peter's condition turns out to be more psychological than physical.
Spiderman not holding back
The opening of the trailer saw Peter transform into his supposedly new enhanced state and beat up Scorpion, an A-tier villain, within seconds. It was a brutal takedown, on par with the PS5 Spider-Man. This could insinuate that Peter is either at breaking point in his life, or that something spiritual has taken over him and he's no longer in control. Either way, the audience is going to see Peter brutally beat up his enemies.
Predictions
I have a few hot takes about what might happen in the movie.
Mutation
Peter is definitely going to undergo a full mutation, and I don't think him and Bruce Banner will be able to stop it. Ultimately though, it'll lead to Peter unlocking his full potential.
Ned figures out Spider-Man's identity
We already know from the trailer that Ned has an obsession with Spider-Man, and is unaware that it's his former best friend. I think Ned will eventually catch on at the end of the movie. It may lead to Peter confessing the truth and an emotional reunion. I don't think there'll be any Hobgoblin story at all after seeing this.
Peters "Death"
I have a hunch that Peter dies after finally gaining control of his mutation. It'll likely happen in battle and would mirror The Other storyline. This would be a cliffhanger ending, and create the emotional low point of the movie before whatever resurrection mechanism they decide to use.
My take
I'm really excited for this movie. The street-level focus, the darker tone, and the adaptation of The Other storyline make this feel very different from the "Home" trilogies. It's lowkey nostalgic as it reminds me of Tobey and Andrew's films.
