A Guide to Coffee (Ranked)
Australian coffee is superior to the rest of the world. Because of our standards, a bad cup of coffee can quite literally ruin your morning. To make sure you never have this issue, follow my personal rankings. Note: I won't be considering the type of milk in this list.
1. Iced Latte
If it's above 25 degrees, an iced latte is mandatory. The only downside of this is that it's more expensive than the rest. It's more refreshing and smoother than a regular latte. The milk-to-coffee ratio is a higher compared to other options. Each to their own though.
2. Cappuccino
If you have a sweet tooth, a cappuccino is a good option. It's basically a latte but with more foam and a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top. It makes it visually appealing and softens it up. Traditionally, it's got an equal distribution of espresso, milk, and foam. Grab this if you want to start your morning with a treat.
3. Latte
If you prefer coffee on the milkier side, then a latte is good choice. It's mellow and low in bitterness. This is number 3 on the list as it's nice to sip on and enjoy for long periods of time.
4. Flat White
I'm ranking this high primarily because it's hard to mess up. If a cafe can't make this properly, just leave. There's a 1:2 ratio of espresso to steamed milk, with barely any foam. It's not bad for strong coffee drinkers. A downside is that it gets cold much quicker, so you should drink fast. It's definitely a must-try though, esepecially if you need a quick but enjoyable caffeine hit.
5. Espresso
An espresso is made by forcing water through a puck of finely ground coffee in a short amount of time. It's the base for all the milk coffees. This is a hit or miss. If you're on a diet or need pre-workout, this is what you want.
Don't get this if you plan to enjoy yourself.
My take: Why Espresso is so important
Good coffee is simple. It starts with well-extracted espresso and properly textured milk.
If a drink needs sugar, syrups, or extras to taste good, something's already gone wrong. The best coffees aren't complicated, they're just done properly.
