My first watch - Tissot Memphis Gent
My first watch was the Tissot Memphis Gent. I bought it in January 2022 after looking at it for around 6 months. It cost me around $500 with 2 years of warranty. I got so much heat for purchasing it because of its quirky design, especially as a first watch.
When I was initially browsing watches, I wasn't too focused on hidden details and characteristics, but mostly design and feel. Nothing really stood out to me, and everything looked too basic. For this reason, I was drawn to the Tissot Memphis Gent. The dial design and the gold case decoration was also very striking to me. It felt more on the creative side.
When I was comparing it to watches suggested to me, such as Daniel Wellington and Seiko, I felt as if they were too balanced, and simulated the perfect watch. The Memphis Gent did the opposite. There was an imbalance in the design which made it much more attractive. One thing as an example was that the markers weren't consistent. In theory this should throw off buyers, however, it just felt very right.
The one thing which held me back for a while was the price. At the time I think it was around $500. I was still new to watches, so it was a culture shock for me. I think one of the reasons I ended up buying it was the fact it was limited edition, and that it was a quartz. I'd be a bit more hesitant if it was a different movement, solely because I didn't have any experience with watches.
I definitely have no regrets with this purchase. I like to wear it frequently for a range of events, from casual to formal. I'm glad it's not being sold anymore, I prefer to keep it gatekept.
