Chess Opening Tier List
Ranking my favourite chess openings to play as a 1500 ELO player (not a GM yet)
| Rank | Opening | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ponziani | A compact, slightly offbeat option that punishes inaccurate play. Easy to learn the basic ideas such as development + early central pressure, and also effective at club level where other players often misplace pieces. |
| 2 | Stafford Gambit | Very sharp and tactical as Black. It's great for surprise value in blitz or casual games. High-risk and high-reward. I'd avoid in serious tournaments, but fun and practical against unprepared opponents. |
| 3 | Scandinavian Defense | Opens the position early and gets Black straight into active play. Good practical choice, straightforward plans, and fewer long theory branches than other mainstream defenses. |
| 4 | Queen's Gambit | Solid, classical opening with plenty of strategic play. Great to learn long-term planning and piece coordination. Works at all levels but requires study to handle different paths and sharp sidelines. |
| 5 | Italian Game | Classic developing system that hits quickly at the centre and f7. Rich tactical possibilities and useful for practicing rapid development and early piece activity. |
